  1. While on tank patrol through the narrow streets of Abu Ghraib, just west of Baghdad, Pfc. Clifton Hicks was given an order. Abu Ghraib had become a “free-fire zone,” Hicks was told, and no “friendlies” or civilians remained in the area. “Game on. All weapons free,” his captain said. Upon that command, Hicks’s unit opened a furious fusillade, firing wildly into cars, at people scurrying for cover, at anything that moved. Sent in to survey the damage, Hicks found the area littered with human and animal corpses, including women and children, but he saw no military gear or weapons of any kind near the bodies. In the aftermath of the massacre, Hicks was told that his unit had killed 700-800 “enemy combatants.” But he knew the dead were not terrorists or insurgents; they were innocent Iraqis. “I will agree to swear to that till the day I die,” he said. “I didn’t see one enemy on that operation.”

  2. Every one of these ‘massacre’ stories that has surfaced has been debunked. Every one of these supposed ‘veterans’ who agrees “to swear to that till the day I die,” has later been exposed as someone lying to either get their 15 minutes of fame, and as someone supporting a political agenda that doesn’t support the war. The U.S. military in today’s climate doesn’t do ‘free fire zones.’ I’m not sure what fantasy book you got this from, but I’m pretty sure it didn’t happen. I spent my fair share of time there, and know scores from all of our services, and some from other nations who spent much more time there than I who NEVER saw anything even remotely like what you describe.

Every one of these guys I’ve seen so far has been anything but credible. They are guys who joined the military to get free college tuition, but never thought they would actually have to do something to EARN that money. They are bitter about having to do the duty of FREE MEN. This Hicks character posts on the “Iraq Veteras Against the War” sight, and you can see by his writings that I’m likely right on target about most people like him. He whines about “bulls___” missions and pulling guard duty, then makes outlandish claims about killing lots of people. These are the kinds of people who cheered when John Murtha loudly accused the Marines in Haditha of indiscriminate killing, and of being murderers and baby killers. Murtha sprinted to the microphones to make these accusations when the story broke, but he did so with no evidence, no proof, and without knowing the FACTS of what actually happened. Amazing how when EVERY SINGLE MARINE was COMPLETELY EXONERATED that Mr. Murtha couldn’t seem to find a microphone to say “I was wrong,” or “I’m sorry.” Now that he is no longer with us, that will never happen.

By even posting the kind of trash in your post, you dishonor the soldiers, sailors, and airmen who are serving bravely and diligently to protect your right to voice such an idiotic opinion. I will leave your post in plain sight as a monument of stupidity to you an those like you who do not understand freedom or what is required to preserve it, and are not themselves willing to fight for it.

  3. “I spent my fair share of time there, and know scores from all of our services, and some from other nations who spent much more time there than I who NEVER saw anything even remotely like what you describe.”

I hope this (very limited anecdotal evidence) isn’t your proof that the accounts of Winter Soldier have all been debunked. By the way, these accounts were delivered in sworn testimony.

Regarding Haditha, the outcome was a travesty, and evidence that the military is incapable of effectively policing itself. There was a coverup, and indeed the officers responsible for it have been reprimanded.

“By even posting the kind of trash in your post, you dishonor the soldiers, sailors, and airmen who are serving bravely and diligently to protect your right to voice such an idiotic opinion. I will leave your post in plain sight as a monument of stupidity to you an those like you who do not understand freedom or what is required to preserve it, and are not themselves willing to fight for it.”

How do the current wars protect freedom? What is wrong with dishonoring soldiers?

You’ve been propagandized, by the U.S. media and government, and more immediately by the military itself.

  4. I hope this (very limited anecdotal evidence) isn’t your proof that the accounts of Winter Soldier have all been debunked. By the way, these accounts were delivered in sworn testimony.

Just because someone swears it, that automatically makes it true? There have been several military bashers claiming to have witnessed ‘atrocities’ who have been proven to be lying. The sworn oath means nothing if the character of the person swearing the oath is solid. Richard Nixon or Bill Clinton, anyone? Yes, a few of the misconduct charges against some military individuals are true, and those people are punished. Most of the claims (about the U.S. military) have been proven false. You want military atrocities? Go follow some of the UN ‘peace keepers’ around. Documented atrocities.

“What is wrong with dishonoring soldiers?”

Please tell me your kidding. If you don’t like what the GOVERNMENT is sending the military to do, take that up with the GOVERNMENT. I don’t enjoy going to Iraq or Afghanistan, and would rather that we weren’t there. But we are there. The reasons we went there were sound, but as is always the case with our screwed up government, the original mission has been lost in a black sea of politics. Who is caught in the middle paying the tab for political malfeasance in blood, sweat, and tears? The military. The military members are serving because they believe that is how they can best serve their country. They are honorable and sacrificing more than you will EVER know. As Ronald Reagan once said:

“Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first.”

It is the black-hearted, corrupt, self-serving politicians who you need to be attacking. You should be thanking the military for preserving the freedoms you enjoy, including the freedom to DISHONOR and DISRESPECT them.

If you think the U.S. media propagandized me, your slower than I thought. EVERY major network reported on average 7 negative stories about the military for every positive one, and it was WORSE during the scandals such as Abu Graib and Haditha. The media formerly known as mainstream is so liberally biased, and biased against the military they take great joy in giving the military a public black eye, whether they deserve it or not, and regardless of whether the facts they report are true or not. They pursue ratings 1st, and their liberal agenda a close second.

You need to do your homework, and expand the base from which you draw your information. Your rating for spitting on those who voluntarily put their life on the line to protect YOURS? FAIL.

  5. Show me a few of these accounts which were proven false. Until then you are just another rightist with his head in the sand.

“The reasons we went there were sound,”

Please don’t tell me you continue to swallow the WMD lie. Actually, any other reason would be just as embarrassing to still believe.

“You should be thanking the military for preserving the freedoms you enjoy, including the freedom to DISHONOR and DISRESPECT them.”

Name a way in which current soldiers protect my freedom. Just one.

“If you think the U.S. media propagandized me, your slower than I thought. EVERY major network reported on average 7 negative stories about the military for every positive one, and it was WORSE during the scandals such as Abu Graib and Haditha.”

Provide a source for this. By the way, I would hope the media, biased though it is toward the military-industrial complex, would be less favorable during those two “scandals.”

Here’s an example of this so-called anti-military bias in the media:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/20/us/20generals.html

  6. There are many more proven false than substantiated, and here are just a few. Remember our good buddy John Kerry? He was the poster boy for the biggest fraud of them all so far. Because of people like him, and possibly like you, honorable men and women who did nothing wrong were spat upon for serving their country. Unforgivable.

      http://tigerhawk.blogspot.com/2005/07/arlington-west-chickenhawk-fraud-and.html
    • The chickenhawk argument is obviously absurd, as Christopher Hitchens made painfully clear last week. Is the point that politicians, citizen hawks, or even anti-war activists forfeit their right to declaim on matters of war and peace simply because they have not served, or have not “sent” their children to serve? Or is it that they lack the credibility and judgment necessary to decide whether a war is worth the cost? If the latter, then doesn’t the argument also apply to those who oppose a war? If you cannot judge its worth unless you have served, how can you judge that it is not worthwhile? Indeed, even in his destruction of the chickenhawk argument Hitchens didn’t point to its logical end: that only veterans be allowed to vote. This idea, proposed by Robert Heinlein in Starship Troopers and probably by less serious thinkers in non-fiction settings, is the obvious policy solution to the “chickenhawk problem,” if there were one. Is this what anti-war activists propose? Somehow, I doubt it.

Whether in print, on film, before microphones or on the street, the efforts of Kerry and the VVAW focused on a single objective: to convince the public that America’s military was committing vast numbers of atrocities in Vietnam; that they did so casually and routinely, as a matter of policy.
And they succeeded. Many American soldiers returned home from the war to find they were spat upon in the streets, reviled as baby-killers, and treated as pariahs by former friends. For decades the standard media image of a Vietnam veteran — murderous, addicted, and too damaged psychologically to cope with civilian life — was taken directly from the dark canvas painted by John Kerry and the VVAW in 1971.
But strangely, all those horrific accounts of rape, torture, arson and slaughter that the VVAW had recorded in Detroit seemed to evaporate once the real investigation demanded by Senator Hatfield began. As recounted in Guenter Lewy’s 1978 book “America in Vietnam,” few witnesses agreed to talk with military investigators, even after being assured that they would not be asked about their own crimes. Many of those who did permit interviews turned out never to have been in combat. Some of the most gruesome claims came from men who were imposters using the names of real Vietnam veterans. One Marine who had been in combat eventually told investigators that a member of the Nation of Islam had helped prepare his statement, and admitted that he had never witnessed any of the atrocities he had testified to in Detroit. In the end, the Navy was unable to verify any of the hundreds of war crimes alleged by the Winter Soldier Investigation. Neither has anyone else during the 33 years since, including journalists, historians, and military and Congressional investigators.
In fact, the entire Winter Soldier Investigation that John Kerry represented so memorably before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee was a fraud; a propaganda effort designed to horrify America into abandoning the war in Vietnam by poisoning public opinion against a generation of American soldiers.

ianganderson: “Please don’t tell me you continue to swallow the WMD lie. Actually, any other reason would be just as embarrassing to still believe.”

Yes, Mr. Anderson. Saddam did indeed have weapons of mass destruction, and he actually used them. You people conveniently forget this fact. So, Saddam having WMD isn’t a lie, but merely an inconvenient truth for the left.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_and_weapons_of_mass_destruction

…Hussein was internationally known for his use of chemical weapons in the 1980s against Kurdish civilians during and after the Iran–Iraq War. It is also known that in the 1980s he pursued an extensive biological weapons program and a nuclear weapons program.

After the 1990-1991 Persian Gulf War, the United Nations located and destroyed large quantities of Iraqi WMD and related equipment and materials throughout the early 1990s, with varying degrees of Iraqi cooperation and obstruction.

    http://www.fas.org/nuke/guide/iraq/cw/program.htm

In 1982, early in the Iran-Iraq War, the Iraqis used riot control agents to repel Iranian attacks. They progressed to the use of CW agents in mid-1983 with mustard, and in March 1984 with tabun (the first use ever of a nerve agent in war). The Iraqis continued to use chemical weapons until the end of hostilities in August 1988; in addition they introduced the nerve agents sarin and GF late in the war.

ianganderson: “Name a way in which current soldiers protect my freedom. Just one.

It actually disturbs me that you and so many like you have no idea what secured and preserves the freedoms that you abuse every day. Had brave men and women not taken up arms against the British, do think America would exist in the first place? Had brave men and women not taken up arms against the Germans and Japanese, which of the two languages would you be speaking today rather than English? Had America not had a military large enough to deter the aggression of the Soviet Union following WWII, you would either be speaking Russian, or be radioactive dust scattered to the winds. Now as you see our military being weakened by our spineless politicians, you see evil people around the world being emboldened to attack us. Do you relish the thought of converting to islam, of praying 5 times a day or being beaten for not being pious enough, of being beaten, imprisoned or killed if you speak out against your new “liberators?” If you think that our military hasn’t been the only thing standing between you and that, you are a simple fool. Words on paper don’t stop barbarians and animals. Strength does.

ianganderson: “Provide a source for this. By the way, I would hope the media, biased though it is toward the military-industrial complex, would be less favorable during those two “scandals.”

My memory of the proportion of anti-military stories (“…average 7 negative stories about the military for every positive one”) was off, but not by much. A 3 or 4 to one bias is still a heck of a bias. Some examples:

    Liberal Media Bias: http://www.mrc.org/static/biasbasics/mediabias101.aspx

“…CNN and MSNBC devoted more resources to covering stories that reflected poorly on the U.S. mission in Iraq, while FNC aired more stories about U.S. achievements in Iraq than either of its rivals. …”

So, Mr. Anderson. Who is it that has their head in the sand? I’m willing to admit when I’m wrong, but so far you haven’t proven me to be so. Here are some of the things I believe that perhaps you think are “wrong.” I believe God sent His son, Jesus Christ, to pay for our sins and show us the path to salvation. I believe in the constitution of the Unites States of America AS WRITTEN. I believe that America is the greatest nation the earth has ever known, not because we have the best government, but because up until now we have had the LEAST government, and because of the entrepreneurial spirit of the America people. I also believe that this will become a historical fact unless more Americans wake up more quickly to the misguided fallacy of the socialist path we are being led down.

Mr. Anderson, I don’t wish you or anyone on the left ill will, harm, or other misfortune. I want us to bring our ideas to the table and back them with fact in an attempt to win our arguments. The attempts to win arguments by intimidating others into silence (i.e. global warming/climate change) will never work, and will never bring two sides together. Right now on the national front, intimidation and trickery is the only thing coming from the left. This is why support for the left is evaporating quickly. There are many stupid people out there who can be fooled easily, but many of the people fooled previously weren’t stupid, just asleep. That is changing. When policies based in ideology and a lust for power rather than in reality and proven principles begin to HURT people, they start waking up quickly. And just like the animals we are being treated as, make us hungry enough, and hurt us badly enough, and we will bite back.

  7. Give me a valid source for the debunking of Winter Soldier claims. The Swift Boat veterans smear campaign and right-wing garbage sites like News Busters (and Glenn Beck!?) won’t suffice to anyone who isn’t already a blinkered warmonger.

That is your evidence that Iraq was in possession of WMDs? If you want to know the truth, read about Judith Miller and the run up to invasion and how the case was deliberately trumped up. Then read about how we never found any of these weapons. It’s embarrassing to think that anyone could still believe that there was a valid reason to invade Iraq.

“Now as you see our military being weakened by our spineless politicians, you see evil people around the world being emboldened to attack us. Strength does.”

This is a collection of psychoses. There is no one intent on invading and converting us to Islam by force which has any chance of actually doing so. Name a single country which would be capable of doing so.

The other examples were from at least 50 years ago. There is no actual threat we have been protected against by the modern soldier.

And to prove that the media is biased against the military, you give me the Heritage Foundation and other right-wing conspiracy websites. All of the sources you’ve given me have terrible track records, and are biased themselves, so of course they will say that their viewpoint is not being represented–it is fringe fantasy, so I would hope the factual media would leave it alone.

It’s very hard to take you seriously when you claim that global warming is part of an intimidation effort (I bet you are one of those who thinks that cold weather disproves it?), that Obama is “leading us down a socialist path, that there are “barbarians and animals” waiting to take us over. Pull your head out of the sand and understand that American foreign policy actions, not a desire to convert us all by the sword, have led to what little blowback we have experienced over the last decade.

I’m not sure if there is anything I can say to you to break your profound delusion. It’s likely that you’re too far gone (you’re basically a conspiracy theorist or right-wing cultist at this point) for me alone to pull you back to reality. You claim to adhere to fact, so here is a challenge: show that your preferred sources have a track record of actually predicting reality. Don’t rely on the same right-wing sources to tell you what reality is.

  8. A documented senatorial investigation turning up nothing to support the Winter Soldier claims isn’t proof enough for you? Documented photographic evidence and “sworn testimony” of victims being gassed by Saddam Hussein isn’t proof enough for you? The time line of islamic attacks against us starting more than a decade ago, and backed by their goal and strategy IN WRITING isn’t enough proof for you? The “science” of the global warming “scientists” (read political hacks) being disproved and documented, even begrudgingly by mainstream media isn’t enough proof for you? And you can’t see how the military of this nation doesn’t offer you any protection? And you call me deluded? The “right wing conspiracy” sources that you don’t like are exactly the ones who have the better track record of accuracy that you claim to seek.

There is indeed one of us who may be beyond hope here, but I’m pretty sure it’s not me. Cheers.

  9. You’re thinking about the Vietnam-era Winter Soldier testimonials, and you’re wrong about them as well.

What Islamic grand strategy is there? Are all Muslims party to it? Are any Iraqis? Who has attacked us in the last decade? Do you even know? Do you care?

Global warming is science–what is your evidence that it has been debunked? If you’re talking about the leaked emails, the scientist involved has been cleared of wrongdoing and his emails were taken out of context deliberately by the dishonest right-wing media.

I’ll reiterate my challenge: prove that Glenn Beck, rightwingnews, Heritage Foundation, and newsbusters have a track record of accuracy.

I can sum up the challenge in one question: does anyone outside of your fringe right-wing circle consider them accurate? If the answer is yes, show me. If the answer is no, there are two possibilities: the rest of the world is suffering under a persistent delusion (such a belief would make you clinically paranoid), or they only tell you what you want to hear and you lap it up because you have low standards in this and likely every other arena.

Take Fox News for example. Its own lawyers argued that the first amendment gave Fox the right to deliberately distort the news. Here’s something for you to read: http://www.relfe.com/media_can_legally_lie.html

You’re being lied to, and when pressured each and every one of those sources you gave would say “Well, we can do this because of the first amendment.” Legally, they are correct. Anyone can lie, but why would you take them as a trusted news source? Admit you’ve been had and join the rest of us in the real world.

  10. IGA,
How am I wrong about the Winter Soldiers thing?

The Quran/Koran spells out the islamic strategy. I can’t say ALL muslims are part of it, but many actively are, and many more tacitly support it. Attacks? Don’t you read, watch, or listen to the news?

    • 1983 – Beirut embassy bombing. Attacked by islamic terrorists.
    • 1988 – Pan Am 103 blown up. Attacked by islamic terrorists.
    • 1993 – 1st WTC bombing. Attacked by islamic terrorists.
    • 1998 – Embassy bombings in Tanzania and Kenya. Attacked by islamic terrorists.
    • 2000 – USS Cole bombing. Attacked by islamic terrorists.
    • 2001 – WTC destroyed, 3000+ killed… by islamic terrorists.
    • 2006 – Muslim hit-n-run rampage through Jewish San Francisco neighborhood, wounds 18, kills 1. Radical islam in action?
    • 2007 – 6 radical islamists arrested in plot to attack Ft. Dix. Planned by “radical islamists”
    • 2009 – Little Rock recruiting center shooting. Committed by a convert to islam.

The list goes on and on.

Global warming is “science?” Only junk science. Evidence? The former head of the CRU at East Anglia University, which was the primary source of “data” to the IPCC, ADMITTED that the data was false. Questions? Thanks for playing.

Can you prove YOUR sources are accurate? Anything I present to you, you will simply dismiss as “right wing conspiracy theories.” Fox News, Drudge, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, and others NOT in the “lamestream” media broke story after story after story that NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, etc. willfully ignored until they could ignore them no longer. The backgrounds of various cabinet members, i.e. Van Jones and others, backroom deals on health care “reform,” “stimulus” fraud, and many others were broken by my sources, and only begrudgingly and incompletely reported by the media formerly known as mainstream when they could no longer be ignored. Simply reporting NOTHING doesn’t make NBC, ABC, etc. more accurate than Fox News or Glenn Beck. It just illustrates their bias. The delusional one is the one who refuses to see that his media sources are being proven wrong or incomplete on a daily basis. That would be you, sir. The story you cite about Akre and Wilson is primarily sourced by left leaning blogs and EXTREMELY left leaning sites like the democratic underground. I won’t go as far as saying that the story is untrue, because I simply don’t know. But I will say that if you intend to sway me or anyone else about the “evil Fox News,” you’ll need to find much more widely credible sources than that.

You think I’m being lied to, and I think the same of you, sir. All of the sources I gave have been proven correct by your own media sources, and when proven incorrect have issued corrections. Networks such as Fox News clearly differentiate between opinion and news. Hannity, Beck, and O’Reilly tell you up front that they are entertainers and are giving you their opinion. They usually back it up with facts that the left CAN’T refute. Then you have the Keith Olberman’s of the left side of the world who spew downright hateful, vitriolic junk and attempt to pass much of it off as fact. They have the same legal rights as Fox, but they are stretching the boundaries of those rights a lot further than Fox.

Who has been had? You are not willing to accept anything I am saying as remotely possibly true, so with such a closed mind I won’t convince you that anything you say might possibly be in error. The world in which you live is in a parallel universe, much like the one in the old super heroes cartoon called Bizzarro World. Common sense does not prevail in your world. Without that, you have no hope of knowing if you are being lied to or not.

  11. “I won’t go as far as saying that the story is untrue, because I simply don’t know:”

You should say this about everything, and start over.

  12. Give it up, IGA. All you’ve been able to do thus far is prove that you are only capable of slinging mud. You have accused me of being biased and uneducated. I freely admit that I am biased, but unlike yourself I’m willing to be proven wrong. Thus far you have been completely unable to do that because you’re NOT ABLE TO. Come back when you’ve done your homework and can present a rational, fact based argument.
